It Doesn’t Snow in Jacksonville, But Your Paint is Still at Risk

The Myth of the "Easy" Winter
If you watch the national news, "winter car care" usually involves ice scrapers, snow tires, and road salt. Living here in Jacksonville, it is easy to tune that out. After all, we are usually wearing shorts on Christmas Day.
But just because we don't have blizzards doesn't mean your vehicle is safe. In fact, the "Florida Winter" presents a unique set of invisible threats that can ruin your clear coat faster than you might think.
At Paul’s Details 904, we see the damage every spring—damage that could have been prevented with a simple winter reset. Here is why your car needs protection right now.

1. The Salt Air Factor
We may not have salt trucks salting the roads, but we do have the Atlantic Ocean. During the winter months, wind patterns shift and often pick up speed. This carries salty coastal air much further inland than usual.
Salt is the enemy of metal and paint. Even if you don't park on the beach, that microscopic layer of salt sits on your car's surface, slowly eating away at the clear coat and promoting rust on the undercarriage. Regular washing and a strong sealant are your only defense.
2. The Pine Tree Attack
In the North, trees lose their leaves and go dormant. In Florida, our pine trees stay active—and aggressive.
Cooler nights and warmer days often cause trees to drop more sap and needles.
Pine Sap: If left on your paint, sap hardens like epoxy. Trying to scrape it off later can pull the paint right off with it.
Needles: They accumulate in the cowl (the area by your windshield wipers) and trap moisture, leading to mold and rust.
3. Why Sealant is Non-Negotiable
In our last post, we talked about using ResistAll to protect your interior cloth seats from spills. That same philosophy applies to your exterior paint.
Your car's clear coat has microscopic pores. Without protection, dirt, salt, and sap embed themselves into those pores. A professional application of a high-quality Paint Sealant creates a sacrificial barrier. It fills those pores so that the debris sits on top of the protection rather than digging into your paint.
Think of it as a shield. When the sap falls, it lands on the shield, not your car, making it easy to wash away.
4. Darkness and Visibility
Finally, winter means it gets dark at 5:30 PM. You are driving in the dark more often, which makes visibility critical.
Take a look at your headlights. Are they yellow, cloudy, or hazy? That oxidation reduces the light output significantly, making it harder for you to see hazards on Greenland Rd or I-95. Our winter detailing packages can include headlight restoration to clear up that haze and keep you safe.
